Summary Article: The Concept of the Savior in Worldly Religions: A Comparative Study

Noor Najeh Husain

The universal savior and his utopia have many features that have been proposed by different religions. They all agree that tomorrow will be a better day and the promised day is close. One of the most important features of this utopia is that it should be a just and reformative government. As Hinduism proposes: “When the world is full of injustice, a perfect man will rise, whose name is ‘the savior’. He will end all oppression and establish a state of justice. He will save the world when Brahmonton rises”. Buddhism also believes in the return of Buddha as the ultimate savior by means of Nirvana. As for Zoroastrianism, it awaits the return of a savior, for whom “the world is prepared and waiting”. These three religions share the feature of ‘power’ in the savior. Hinduism mentions that: “His state shall prolong for a long time, and his life will be long, and he will survive till the end of the world. He will dominate the shores of all seas, the isles of Serendip, the tomb of Adam the father, and the mounts of the moon. His state extends to the north of Venus, and the sword of seas and oceans”. Buddhism refers to the rise of the last Avatar who will rule with justice. He is the incarnation of Buddha himself. The rise of each Avatar, according to their mythology, is every five thousand years. Concerning Zoroastrianism, it believes that among the characteristics of the state of the savior is the well-being of people and the domination of prosperity, while there will be an absence of diseases, destitution, and abundance of blessing and grace. He will be the last savior: “Saoshyant will be the last man who will come to earth, purify it, and destroy injustice”.
